Diagnosing Wireless TCP Performance Problems: A Case Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Researchers have long realized that TCP performance degrades over wireless links. Many solutions, including link-layer error recovery, have been proposed to overcome this problem. This paper studies how these solutions perform in a wireless LAN network environment. The experiments are conducted using off-the-shelf products, in a controlled way. In particular, we focus on Linux 2.4 TCP performance using a USB-based Compaq 802.11b multiport wireless card, as a case study. A multi-layer view is adopted to analyze the complex interactions between layers of the network protocol stack. Our results show that the USB bus, the TCP implementation, and the wireless link-layer protocols can all affect the overall TCP performance. While the TCP and USB implementation problems can be corrected through bug-fixing and proper setting of the USB mode, the wireless-related problems, such as the data/ACK collision problem and the network thrashing problem, may require fundamental changes to link-layer protocols in wireless LANs.

Congestion control in wireless networks is strongly dependent on the dynamics and instability of wireless links. It is known that TCP experiences serious performance degradation problems in wireless networks. New approaches based on TCP try to overcome these problems but, although their performance is increased, they incur in congestion control errors, since they do not evaluate accurately the ...
متن کاملInternet Protocol Performance over Networks with Wireless Links
This article discusses the problems that arise when standard Internet protocols such as TCP are used over wireless links. We review wireless link characteristics with case studies drawn from commercial Wireless LANs and Cellular Telephony systems. We discuss problems with Internet protocols when employed over these systems, such as degraded TCP performance when wireless errors are interpreted a...
متن کاملPerformance Study of TULIP Protocol over 802.11 Wireless Networks
The TCP performance degrades over the wireless networks due to non congestion related problems but performs well in case of wired networks. The current network scenarios consist of combined wired and wireless links which demands for investigating the performance in such heterogeneous scenarios. The non congestion losses on the wireless link are interpreted by TCP as congestion losses and eventu...
متن کاملThe Solutions for Packet Reordering in TCP over Wireless Networks
Packet Reordering is a phenomenon on the Internet and must be taken into account when considering performance analysis in wireless networks. Due to various characteristics specific to wireless networks, such as signal fading and mobility, packets may be lost due to congestive and noncongestive losses. The noncongestive losses violate the design principles of some traffic control mechanisms in T...
متن کاملAn Analytical Study of a Tradeoff Between Transmission Power and FEC for TCP Optimization in Wireless Networks
It is well known that TCP has performance problems when wireless links are involved in the end-to-end connection. This is due to the high bit error rate characterizing wireless links. Appropriate power management and error correction can improve the link reliability observed by TCP and increase the throughput performance accordingly. In the literature, the effects of transmission power and erro...
